You don’t have to be big to make a difference

David said to Saul, “Let no one’s heart fail because of him; your servant will go and fight with this Philistine.” 33 Saul said to David, “You are not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him; for you are just a boy, and he has been a warrior from his youth.” 34 But David said to Saul, “Your servant used to keep sheep for his father; and whenever a lion or a bear came, and took a lamb from the flock, 35 I went after it and struck it down, rescuing the lamb from its mouth; and if it turned against me, I would catch it by the jaw, strike it down, and kill it. 36 Your servant has killed both lions and bears; and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be like one of them, since he has defied the armies of the living God.” 37 David said, “The Lord, who saved me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear, will save me from the hand of this Philistine.” So Saul said to David, “Go, and may the Lord be with you!”

This past Sunday’s scripture is from I Samuel, chapter 17.  This is the familiar story of David and Goliath.  Most of us know the story and know that David helped the Israelites defeat the Philistines by killing Goliath with his slingshot.  What some people may not know is that David was very young and Saul and others thought that David was not able to fight with the Israelites due to his age and stature.  David could have been insecure about this but he decided to stand up for himself and show the Israelites and Saul, their king, what he could do.

In I Samuel 16 we read:

But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him; for the Lord does not see as mortals see; they look on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.”

So God isn’t concerned about our appearance or our stature.  He is more concerned about what is in our heart.  What should we take from this?  Have you ever been afraid to serve God because you don’t think you are qualified? I would challenge you to try it and you will be amazed what God can do through you.

This reminds me of the starfish story:

One day Bob was walking down the beach and he was throwing starfish into the water that were stuck on the beach.  There were hundreds of starfish but he kept throwing them in as he walked along.

Dave saw what Bob was doing and asked him, “Why are you throwing the starfish into the water?  It won’t make that much difference because you can’t save that many”.

Bob threw another starfish into the water and said, “Well, it made a difference to that one”.

Have a blessed week!
